Here is an article from our latest newsletter.

Protective Assets and Risk Factors:

Research shows that communities with a variety of positive assets, such as good schools, the availability of a variety of healthy activities, and strong family bonds often have less juvenile crime, better high school graduation rates, and lower rates of teen drinking. Risk factors, such as easily obtainable drugs and alcohol, lack of social activities, and academic failure can have the reverse results. The Communities That Care Survey highlighted the wealth of assets Geauga County has and also pointed out some of the risk factors affecting our teens today.

Protective Outcomes and Protective Assets Reported by Geauga Teens from CTC Survey:

  • Overall use of alcohol and other drugs among teens has dropped over the past three years.
  • Students said their parents were very involved in their everyday lives.
  • Teens reported high moral values and low regard for crime and violence.
  • Teens in Geauga County had many social and recreational activities from which to choose.
  • Attachment to school and family was strong.

A Few Risk Factors Are Still Issues:

While most grades showed a drop in teenage drinking, 9th and 10th grade drinking went up slightly.
Many teens felt their parents wouldn’t show strong disapproval of them drinking alcohol, wine, or hard liquor. See related cover story

Building and maintaining positive community assets will help kids in Geauga County thrive

Examples of Protective Factors: Examples of Risk Factors:

Strong parent/child bonds Easily obtainable drugs and alcohol
Parental involvement in the child’s life Lack of high moral standards
Strong school systems Associating with drug or alcohol using peers
Positive peer influence Lack of community or school recognition
Involvement in religious activities Few social outlets for positive interaction
Participation in pro-social activities

In a surprising finding from a survey completed by Geauga County students, almost 28% of all high school seniors said they believed their parents may not be all that upset about teen drinking. In the “Communities that Care Survey”, those seniors said their parents would only find it “a little bit wrong” or “not wrong at all” if they drank beer, wine, or hard liquor. The finding came from responses provided by 6,936 students surveyed by the Geauga County Board of Mental Health & Recovery Services to help find community risk factors that may contribute to teen drinking or other problem behaviors.
